Our Footprint

The Inn and cottages were built to be environmentally responsible when owner Earlene bought the land over 20 years ago. Among the below environmental innovations and guest benefits, Earlene has shaped her restaurant to source all of its ingredients from within a 100km range to her location. All vegetable waste is composted on-site and used to renew the gardens. “Green boxes” are used for grocery shopping. Policies that assist our guests in joining us to reduce power usage and waste. SOLAR PANELS

Earlene knew she wanted to run a sustainable Inn that was conscious of its carbon footprint. She installed solar panels right from the start and soon learned how challenging it was to find the expertise and the equipment. Being determined and dedicated to her method of always buying local whenever possible, she managed to source all of the labour and equipment from Nova Scotia.

The active solar water heating system was installed on the south side of the roof to provide domestic hot water and radiant heat through an in-floor space heating system. It is estimated that the inn’s energy systems, combined with high efficiency insulation and windows, save about 25,000 kWh of energy per year and have eliminated the consumption of fossil fuels for space and water heating.

Acheivements

Environment Canada participates in the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Pollution Prevention Awards Program, which recognizes organizations that have shown leadership and innovation in pollution prevention.

The Inn was awarded a CCME award in 2006 and was one of two properties in Nova Scotia awarded a Four Green Leaf designation by the Audubon Green Leaf EcoRating Program.
